The Forest God

Soph, Book, Blog, & Candle

The Forest God is a gentle and humorous yet heartbreaking story with great writing that will make you swoon.

The Great Book Wyrm

I devoured this novella in one sitting. Partially because it is a novella and partially because I was swept up in this simple, but beautiful story.

Tara Grímravn, Tangent Online

In the end, The Forest God is a genuinely a wonderful read with a bittersweet ending. Readers who enjoy fairy tales and fables, or even fantasy in general, will appreciate it.

The Blood of Four Gods and Other Stories

Kate Sherrod, Skiffy and Fanty

The adjectives that come to mind when I start describing the stories in Jamie Lackey’s latest collection — “graceful”, “elegant”, “accomplished”, “economical”, “beautiful” — all trouble me a bit, because they all come straight out of the 19th century’s idealization of Womanhood, but I just can’t help it. They all apply, and to every one of these tales.

Which is to say that The Blood of Four Gods and Other Stories is a very feminine collection, and not just because Lackey’s protagonists are young and female — but don’t be fooled into thinking you’re going to encounter a bunch of simpering misses waiting for husbands, being pimped out by their parents, or being repressed or abused. These are fully realized people, having to deal with huge and daunting problems (and a few impediments, but rarely are these attributable to their gender), and deal with them they do — but in very traditionally feminine ways.

The Blood of Four Gods is my first exposure to Jamie Lackey’s fiction and I enjoyed every story in her collection. She writes with a consistent style which bridges the simplicity of folktales with the complexity of modern literature, and by grounding her stories in mythology, despite their fantasy elements, they feel more believable. Her stories are not long and there is also a common theme of coming of age, making this a great collection for teen readers as well.

A Metal Box Floating Between Stars and Other Stories

Katie, A Cup of Cyanide

A Metal Box Floating Between Stars and Other Stories is a fantastic collection of SF/F short stories that feature everything from assassins turned Instagram foodies to creepy parasitic foot worms. Also bug aliens. Lots and lots of bug aliens. What really ties these stories together though is the focus on human connection and emotion. While most of these stories are set in second worlds, the driving conflict is rarely the SFF elements but how the humans in the story interact. Lackey’s writing style brings out very thought-provoking and evocative pieces, that leaves the reader thinking, ‘would I have made the same choice?’.

Kevin P Hallett, Tangent Online

Most of the stories in this collection are set in the distant future and either explore human evolution or our encounters with alien life. Jamie Lackey has a writing style that is both engaging and a pleasure to read.
